The AbsoluTrio was founded in 2003 by Peter von Wienhardt for the occasion of a tour to South Korea. The trio unites Erik Schumann (violin), Nicolas Altstaedt (violoncello) and Peter von Wienhardt (piano).
The artists themselves consider this constellation to be quite distinctive, due to the fact that each of the artists also enjoys a successful international solo career. Among the three artists they share several well-known international prizes and awards.
The artists understand their collaboration as the musical synthesis of three soloists, who each maintain their respective characteristics within the trio, thereby creating a very special ensemble sound. This basic motivation and concept of their collaboration developed during the first days of rehearsal and was also integral in determining the name of the trio. “We want to play absolutely without compromising. None of us should limit himself in relation to the others.” In this way, three soloistic playing styles are melded into one trio sound, forming the AbsoluTrio, representing unique and fresh interpretations.
These are made possible not only due to the enormous technical capabilities of each individual player. The individual playing method and character of the AbsoluTrio crystallized itself very quickly. It has repeatedly proved itself in the auditorium as a highly entertaining encounter with classical music. In spite of the strong artistic personalities and their unique skills, a very natural musical communication developed among the players, which the audience not only hears, but can see as well. The programs played on their concerts and tours are what make the AbsoluTrio unique. Their programs are thematically conceived and quite often also newly arranged or composed. Among other works, Schumann, Altstaedt and von Wienhardt also play their musical favorites. For example, Peter von Wienhardt arranged various works by Piazzolla for their latest concert tour, dedicated to the argentinian Tango.
The great success of this quite young trio is reflected in the high number of audience members during their concerts in Asia, the rave reviews, and the quick demand for the CD productions of the ensemble. Two CDs by the AbsoluTrio under the Korean Label Interkultur appeared on the Asian market in November 2005. “AbsoluTrios tribute to Piazzolla” is a hommage to the composer Astor Piazzolla (with several arrangements by Peter von Wienhardt), while “AbsoluTrio Opus 1” offers musical essences by Lalo, Paganini, Mompou, Rostropovich, Sarasate and Haydn, providing the listener with a representative concert program of the AbsoluTrio.
In the meantime, the AbsoluTrio has become a permanent member of the concert scene in Asia, and has recently expanded its Asian roots increasingly towards Europe as well. In addition to concert tours in South Korea and India, the AbsoluTrio will also give concerts in Dubai, Sweden, and Germany in 2006.
Their repertoire includes the entire well-known repertoire for trio (the complete German repertoire, as well as concertos written for this trio constellation) as well as more exotic literature, as already mentioned above, works often arranged or composed specifically for their own concerts.
